April 5, 2010 – JVC announced a new flagship camcorder for its professional HD line today: the GY-HM790. The shoulder-mount camcorder is an upgrade over last year's GY-HM700, so it has a similar set of features and body design. The camcorder will be on display later this week at the National Association of Broadcasters convention in Las Vegas, and it should be hitting the stores this summer with an MSRP of $11,995 (including a kit lens).
Like the GY-HM700 before it, the GY-HM790 features three 1/3-inch CCD sensors and a 1/3-inch bayonet lens mount system. The camcorder ships with a Canon 14x optical zoom lens, but a variety of other lenses can be accommodated by the mount. The HM790 offers full 1080i HD recording, as well as a 720p mode and a 480i standard definition setting. At its highest quality setting, the GY-HM790 records with a 35Mbps bitrate.
The main differences between the HM700 and the new HM790 appears to be ports and connectivity features. The GY-HM790 includes built-in time code and genlock connections, a FireWire terminal, and an HD/SD-SDI port. The 4.3-inch LCD appears to be unchanged from last year's models.
The camcorder's main recording media is its dual SD/SDHC memory card slots, but an optional SxS recording module can be attached directly to the camcorder. One of the GY-HM790's biggest selling points may be its native file recording system that outputs video clips that are easily transferrable to Apple's Final Cut Pro editing software (video files can be saved as .mov or .mp4 for added convenience).
JVC also made an announcement for a special low light version of the GY-HM790, which is being dubbed the GY-HM790LL. This camcorder uses JVC's LoLux function to enhance shooting capabilities in low light environments. The LoLux version will be available to broadcast direct customers beginning in Autumn 2010.
